Winter in Johannesburg brings crisp mornings and chilly evenings, but at Palm Court Karate, our training intensity never wavers. In fact, we embrace the colder months as an opportunity to build mental toughness alongside physical skill.
Traditional martial arts schools in Japan and Okinawa often conducted winter training (Kangeiko) specifically to forge discipline and resilience. While we don't train in snow, we do use the winter season to focus on aspects of training that build character.
Our winter program includes extended warm-up routines to prevent injury, focused technique work that benefits from the slower, more deliberate pace that cold weather naturally encourages, and breathing exercises that are especially effective in cooler air.
We've found that students who maintain their training through winter often emerge in spring with noticeably improved focus and determination. The discipline required to show up when it's cold and dark outside translates directly into improved performance in all areas of their karate journey.
Stay warm, train hard, and embrace the season!
